My Story

Hi, I’m Julie, a multi award-winning radio presenter, voiceover, event host and media trainer. People often ask how I ended up on the radio in the first place, and I grant you, it isn’t an obvious choice to sit in a room talking yourself every day. It certainly wasn’t an option from the career’s advisor either! But I adored doing drama at school and college. I enjoyed doing silly voices, playing the comedy parts and making people laugh.I just wasn’t fond of people watching me do it! The voice can DO so much and BE so much more than the visual, it can draw people in, and that was always the appeal.

Luckily a friend of mine was in hospital radio and said, “Why don’t you try that?”. I did, and I was totally bitten by the radio bug. Management thought I’d taken to it like a ‘duck to water’…and 30 years later, I’m still doing it, having worked at various stations across the North East.

I’ve studied radio to Masters level, I’ve taught live radio, radio production and radio drama to 1st and 3rd year undergraduates. But there’s absolutely nothing quite like doing live radio - it’s what makes me tick. So, every weekday morning on Zetland FM you can find me broadcasting locally on 105FM and online across the world from a windswept tower on the North Sea coast.

In the last three years I’ve won several national radio awards, been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and I’ve even been featured on the BAFTA nominated four-part documentary, “The Mighty Redcar”, where my radio show was sprinkled through 3 of the 4 episodes as a linking device bringing the individual local stories together.

But whatever I’m doing, from radio, to voiceover, to hosting to training – it’s all about the voice with character and personality. Perhaps you could use my voice for your next project. Or let me use my skills and experience to help you to find yours!
